Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 29, 2007, at Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dick Williams and the Rev. Steve Butler officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Valley Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 29, 2007, at Heartland Funeral Home. Bill Herring was born June 8, 1925, in Hillsboro, Texas, the son of Homer William and Eddie Herring Dodd. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Nov. 11, 1942. His boat training was completed at the USNAS in San Diego, Calif. After completion of boat training he was assigned to NAS signal school, the University of Illinois, Urbana, Ill. Bill was then commissioned in the USS Leedstown APA 56. He served 29 months sea duty. The Leedstown, an amphibious troop transport, served in the joint Pacific Fleet, 58th Task Force. He was actually on signal duty/watch and saw the U.S. flag raised on Iwo Jima. He was discharged from the Navy Nov. 27, 1945, in Houston, Texas. Once discharged, he headed to Crowell, Texas, where the love of his life lived, and later married Dorothy Hall on July 12, 1945. They were married more than 61 years. Through the influence of the Hall family and his bride, Bill gave his life to Christ and made a public commitment of his new faith in Lubbock, Texas, in 1946. He was ordained a deacon in the First Baptist Church of Benjamin, Texas, March 31, 1963. The church issuing his certificate, being chosen as a man of good report, full of the spirit and of wisdom and capable of using the office well, was set publicly to the office. Bill was a member of Brownwood First Baptist Church and continued being a deacon. Bill worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for 41 years before his retirement. Then moved with Dorothy to Lake Brownwood. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Dodd, still living at Lake Brownwood; son, Charles Dodd of Waco; daughter, Dee Hart of Brownwood; grandchildren, Ryan Dodd of Richardson, Sgt. Eric Hart of El Paso, Kristen Dodd of Dallas and Jordan Dodd of Waco; and great-grandchildren, Kynara, Jaiden and Christopher Hart of El Paso. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Christopher Hart, in 1994.
