Services for Earl Hinson Cumba, 84, of Lake Brownwood are set for 10 a.m. Monday, May 17, 2004, at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Charles Copeland officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Valley Cemetery under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. today, May 16, at the funeral home in Early. Mr. Cumba passed away Friday, May 14 ,2004 at his home. Earl Cumba was born to Lee and Jewell Bankhead Cumba on Jan. 25, 1920 in Stacy, Texas. He attended school in Rochester, Texas. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the United States Army, Company H, 163rd Infantry, for three years, six months and eight days. He saw action in the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and was awarded several service medals. He married Velma Dupriest Aug. 10, 1946 in Rising Star. He was retired from Exxon Co. U.S.A. Mr. Cumba had been a deacon in the Baptist Church since 1959 and, at the time of his death, was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in the Holder community. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Velma Cumba of the home; his son, Robert Cumba of Lake Brownwood; two daughters, Jeanie Rice of Snyder and Mary Babcock of Littleton; four sisters, Ann Sansom of Early, Lorene Gage of Victoria, Patsy Beene of Early and Janie Elam of Cottonwood; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren; his church family and a host of other family members and friends.
